Brewers Beat Zito and the Giants!
San Francisco starter Barry Zito was destroyed by Milwaukee, as the Brewers beat the Giants, 10-8. In the bottom of the second, Milwaukee scored their first run. Carlos Gomez homered (1) on a line drive to left field. The homerun by Gomez finished Barry Zito’s scoreless streak at, 15 and 2/3 innings.
The Giants came back and scored three runs in the third. Brandon Crawford singled on a ground ball to second baseman Rickie Weeks. Barry Zito was out on a sacrifice bunt, first baseman Yuniesky Betancourt to second baseman Rickie Weeks. Crawford advanced to second. Angel Pagan came up to bat and singled on a ground ball to center fielder Carlos Gomez, scoring Crawford. Marco Scutaro reached on a force attempt throwing error by third baseman Alex Gonzalez. Pagan advanced to third. This was an excellent opportunity to score more runs ,and Pablo Sandoval did not fail! He doubled (2) on a line drive to center fielder Carlos Gomez, bringing in two runs. Pagan and Scutaro scored and the Giants took the lead 3-1. Wily Peralta was able to end the inning, retiring Buster Posey and Hunter Pence.
I was happy with this rally and the Giants leading but…the Brewers put a beating on Zito in the bottom of the third. They scored eight runs! What a terrible inning! Pitcher Wily Peralta led off with a single on a line drive to right fielder Hunter Pence. Norichika Aoki was hit by pitch. Peralta advanced to second. Jean Segura came up to bat and he singled on a ground ball to shortstop Brandon Crawford, loading the bases. Ryan Braun struck out on a foul tip and I felt a sigh of relief, however, Rickie Weeks hit a ground –rule double (3) on a line drive down the left-field line bringing in two runs. Peralta and Aoki scored. Segura advanced to third. Jonathan Lucroy joined the party with a single to center fielder Angel Pagan. Segura and Weeks scored. Alex Gonzalez singled on a line drive to left fielder Gregor Blanco, Lucroy advanced to second. Carlos Gomez singled on a line drive to left fielder Gregor Blanco, loading the bases again! Then, my worst nightmare became true; Yuniesky Betancourt hit a grand slam (1) to left field, scoring Lucroy, Gonzalez, Gomez and Betancourt. What a nightmare! Wily Peralta came up to bat and he was called out on strikes, however, Barry Zito was out of control; He walked Norichika Aoki. That was all for Zito. Chad Gaudin replaced Zito. Gaudin retired Jean Segura with a pop out to first baseman Brandon Belt. After three innings, the Brewers were leading 9-3.
In the top of the fourth, San Francisco scored one run. Brandon Crawford homered (2) on a fly ball to right center field. Milwaukee 9, Giants 4.
In the fifth, San Francisco added two more runs and the score was, Milwaukee 9, Giants 6. Angel Pagan led off with a s ground ball single to shortstop Jean Segura. Marco Scutaro walked. Pagan advanced to second. Pablo Sandoval came up to bat and he singled on a line drive to left fielder Ryan Braun, scoring Pagan. Scutaro advanced to third. Then, Buster Posey walked, loading the bases. Pitcher Wily Peralta’s night was over! Reliever Mike Fiers replaced Peralta. Fiers retired Hunter Pence with a line drive to shortstop Jean Segura. Brandon Belt was out on a sacrifice fly to left fielder Ryan Braun, Scutaro scored and Sandoval advanced to third. Finally, Gregor Blanco lined out to right fielder Norichika Aoki leaving runners on base.
In the sixth, the Giants started scoring. With one out and no one on base, pinch-hitter Nick Noonan singled on a line drive to center fielder Carlos Gomez. Angel Pagan walked, advancing Noonan to second. Marco Scutaro singled on a line drive to left fielder Ryan Braun, loading the bases. Picher Mike Fiers was done! Pitcher Brandon Kintzler replaced Fiers. Pablo Sandoval came up to bat, and was out on a sacrifice fly to left fielder Ryan Braun, scoring Noonan. Kintzler got out of the jam with a Buster Posey strikes out swinging.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Brewers scored one more run. Norichika Aoki homered (2) on a fly ball to right field.
In the top of the ninth, the Giants tried to tie the game, but they could not. Reliever Jim Henderson replaced Tom Gorzelanny. Buster Posey led off with a double (3) to center fielder Carlos Gomez. Hunter Pence struck out swinging. Brandon Belt came up to bat and he singled on a ground ball to center fielder Carlos Gomez, scoring Posey. However, Gregor Blanco and pinch-hitter Andres Torres failed to bring in runs. So, the game was over. Milwaukee 10, Giants 8.
Barry Zito (2-1, 4.86 ERA) threw 2 2/3 allowing nine runs on eight hits (a double, two home runs). He also struck out five and walked two. The San Francisco Giants relievers to also take the mound were, Chad Gaudin, Jose Mijares and George Kontos. It was manager Bruce Bochy 58th birthday, but it was not good result to celebrate!
The second of this series will be Wednesday the 17th @Miller Park, Milwaukee, Wisconsin @5:10 PM (Pacific Time). Ryan Vogelsong (1-1, 7.15 ERA) will start for San Francisco and Kyle Lohse (0-1, 2.08 ERA) will start for Milwaukee Brewers. I am going to cross my fingers, hoping San Francisco to win! Let’s go Giants!
